A national organization of doctors says eating hot dogs can lead to cancer.
damit! after being raised in a low income single parent home, this news is as sure as a death sentence for me. how the hell have we all lived this long without these studies?
Oh no! I had a hot dog just yesterday. I had better update my will.
as I was reading this, news of an american winning the annual Nathan's hot dog eating contest is on CNN I wonder if these guys know the danger.
lol, he is a dead man!
Jim,
Wasn't it like 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes or something ridiculous like that? He must have a tumor by now!
Or a serious stomachache at the very least. ;-)
Hebrew National people! They answer to a higher authority!
None better. At least once a week, every week.
I eat about ½ dozen a week, guess I'm screwed!!! LOL....
What is your Favorite Hot Dog?
It just has to be all beef, mustard, relish and onions.
as long as it isn't the mystery meat kind (100% beef or a good polish or german) i don't care as long as it's covered in good chilli and hot mustard. i have to have it where a fork and lots of napkins required. i am hoping the hot mustard burns out the cancer...lol
If you're eating hotdogs more than once a week.... cancer is the least of your worries
note: I'm also poor and eat hotdogs often lol
poor hotdog eaters unite!!!!
I'm not a poor hot dog eater! I'm very good at it! Oh, you meant poor hot dog eaters. My bad. :)
oh no..i mean YES!..the hotdog eaters of america are here.....let me get things boilin"
Neenie... you very funny... I approve. So... did anyone up until this point think that hotdogs were GOOD for us? c'mon... it's squeegee meat! lol
boilin!... ha!
Okay about ready to take the easy way out tonight and make corn dogs in the microwave real quick before my sons baseball game tonight, Michele goes to plan B of chicken nuggets in the microwave to save her kids lives........
Think of it as population control, similar to how the Chinese add melamine to food.
i was debating about bringing this up....but i owned and operated a hog farm in a previous life, for a few years i had a direct contract with a plant that made sausage and hotdogs, when i delivered i would watch the process........i will leave the good part to your imaginations, but guess where the left over hog went? yummy! with a bun and chili on top!!!! LOL
maddad, but all of the extra 'stuff' is what makes it taste so good! (yuck) Best to buy all meat, beef or pork. Btw, I was just joking in #7, hope all knew that. Vitamin C containing foods along with them is a good idea.
since my trip to the processing plant i haven't touch a hotdog knowingly that wasn't 100% something. i do not believe the others will hurt you.....but i cannot get those images out of my head.
I agree. I never went to a processing plant, but knew what is in a traditional hotdog. I don't think they will hurt you, either.
It's not the "parts" that are harmful. It's the high levels of Chemicals added for whatever reason, color, to preserve freshness, whatever. I have heard this same warning about 10 years ago. then it was brain deformitys caused by excessive hot dog consumption.. then, the deadly amount was 2 or 3 hot dogs daily.. now I know hot-dogs are a good low budget standby, but I don't know anyone that eats that many of them. now if we get a warning about top ramen noodles..... we are in trouble...
Jim, I agree that the chemical preservatives are a concern (why vit c might be protective). Additionally, the cooking method and potential carcinogens can be harmful. Generally, the articles I've read are addressing the chemicals in red meat, regardless of the processing, that may be cancerous. Are you thinking hotdogs are any worse than any form of processed deli meat?
I think you hit the nail on the head, PROCESSED food.. I stick to more tradional foods. ie.. whole pork roasts, not packaged deli-meat. I also use good 'ole sugar. I am pretty sure my body knows how to process natural sugar, not sure about fake sugar, talk about screwin with your blood glucose levels!!!! I'm growing a tomato plant at work even... should make good salads and sandwichs soon...
That man who became the world hot dog eating champion, what was it, 68 in ten minutes? He's definitely gonna die of the big "C" if this article is true...
Actually, there is a decent hot dog out there and it tastes great. Expensive, but I love them.

These delicious gourmet hot dogs are big and juicy with a great bite, whether on the grill or on the stovetop. The Maverick franks can be found in Florida at most Publix.
Nope, I don't work for either, but like to eat'em :)
I bet PETA is behind this....
The crazy ones, not the People for Eating Tasty Animals.
Like most studies, this mistakes coincidence with causality. People who eat hot dogs are most likely poor. They also are more prone to unhealthy eating across the board, as well as other high risk factors like smoking.
you also have to consider the type of people that would particicpate in the study, and if they were paid for it, their socio-econimial, ect. I have heard that the trend is not just poor, but a single mother, one child and that kid is has the highest risk...., take one pack of hot dogs, half doz top-ramen noodles, and she has lunch and dinner for a week, and that's another one, how bad is top ramen for you to eat, I spent many of my college days living on them..
Reminds me of my dad before he moved in with us. He did not know how to cook (and didn't want to learn!!), so he would buy these god-awful franks (Bar-S??) on sale for 2 paks/$1.00 and the Ramen Noodles 5/$1.00. Slice up a couple franks into the Ramen and he had lunch and dinner. Then he would go to the local DQ and get a hot fudge sundae!!!
But you know, he had been in WW2, the Korean War and two tours in 'Nam with the Green Berets, he knew what he should and shouldn't eat and I wasn't about to give him "The Lecture".
Yes, he died at the ripe old age of 86. When we cleaned out his room, etc, we found tons of Ramen Noodles hidden here and there :)
