thought I had seen and heard it all -- all the nonsense that people do while they are trying to breastfeed a child can open your eyes -- but this is a new one. But it's probably only new to me because it's just something I never would have considered.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

From the article:

For those of you who have never seen one, the placenta is to the baby what Stephen Baldwin is to Alec Baldwin.

ROFLMAO!

Good thing you don't have to deal with menstruation and childbirth. The race wouldn't have made it.

I cut the cord for both my children which, given my usual level of squeamishness, was an accomplishment.

However, my poor wife had to have our doctor quickly and painfully force the placenta out immediately after our daughter was born. After the umbilical was clamped off, it decided to tear and I heard our doctor say, "Uh oh." I immediately got out of the way and let her do her thing. Later, the doctor said that bleeding out had been a possibility.

I honestly don't know how women do it.

It takes our whole lives to perfect. lol We're the ones that have to go through the menstral cycle the worst not to mention 9 months of carrying a baby that distorts our whole body, birthing and then caring for the child and cleaning up poop and puke. Yeah, we deserve a friggin' medal!

Ye GODS and great goat fish! That is truly one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard of. Why don't you just eat snot instead? Better yet, grab some feces and shove it in your mouth.

I have seen women sniff baby diapers, and heard them say their baby's @!$%# don't stink, and I thought they were mental. But this tops it all, hands down. Disgusting, just disgusting!

My pardon Phuggy, I read your profile, and it did not have any obvious indication of gender... so I had a 50\50 chance (discounting the genders who are not 'quite' sure).

I watched the video as well... If an appetite returns, I promise you there will be nothing remotely resembling 'meat' for some time to come.

I have dissected, handled, tested many a placenta, in surgery, but never would I have considered freeze drying it and attempting to cajole my stomach to keep it down, in spite of the medicinal benefits.

Until I read the article, it was rather a misguided title, as if it had been EATEN. I thought I would see them flop it in a pan and saute' it.... A1-ed and chewed... the idea of it being turned into pills was more reasonable.

I have to agree... medical reasoning aside.... culinary stand point nooooooooot going to happen....

So basically, some old wives tale says its beneficial, so some woman actually eat it???? I've had 3 kids, and I guarantee I'd rather take anti-depressants than try to eat that. I'd be puking way before it ever got close to my mouth anyway whether it was in pill form or not. Grossest thing I ever heard of.

Well actually this isnt the first time I have heard of this. Eating the placenta has been a practice that has been done in many countries and cultures through the ages. It is chock full of good stuff. I.e. nutrients like iron, and many hormones. Allegedly it has also been know to cut down on incidence of post partum deprression, and help prevent post birth anemia since most women lose a great deal of blood. Also in some cultures it is a sign of bonding with the baby. I get kind of torn about if it is a form of cannibalism or not, but I suppose that isnt the point of it either. But I guess with most things it is up to the mother. If she thinks it will be beneficial even if it isnt it could have a placebo effect.
