students will end up with an early release day every Wednesday next school year after the school board voted 4-3 to approve the proposal from the teachers' union on Tuesday night.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The agreement is part of the teacher's contract with the school district. By releasing students an hour earlier on Wednesdays, teachers will have extra time for planning, training, parent conferences and team building.

Well I don't have kids. But it sure seems to me that kids seem to go less then I did back in the day.

They don't go to school one second less than I did, but I've never understood the 'necessity' of a week off in December, February and April every damned year.

The teacher's unions claim they're professionals. I know of no other profession or union that takes time off doing a job to plan for work.

Cipher-0 with respect you've never lived in Dilbert world because in my experience you've almost got to go off grid to plan (and people like to pull you from your work to help them plan).

I think it's a bad idea. It's not that kids need a routine but it does help anyone really.

If they wanted to meet that objective they should have gone to a four day week concept even if they wanted all of Wednesday as the off day.

Wednesday becomes an hour and 15 minutes shorter than the other days. Hopefully the teach focus homework and study away from the other days and put it on Wednesday.

Oh, great more time for them to get in trouble. If both parents work, they will be home alone much longer once a week. Sigh.

I like it when my kids get breaks from school. That is how I keep them focused day to day. The breaks they get are their "finish line". I just tell them to hunker down, get their work done, do a good job and they will be rewarded with a 1/2 day/full day off.

I think the bigger question here is does that mean they don't have as many days off for teacher in-service days? In our area, they get quite of lot of those, which I'd gladly do without for an hour and 15 minutes per week. I'm guessing they'll still get those day off though, that's the way the world turns, you work less for more money.
