What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

It's so sad. Researchers have found that since the 1980s virtually all Miss America contestants are so thin that they meet the criteria for anorexia (85% of healthy body weight). Most of these girls work out for hours a day and restrict their calories like crazy.

What's more sad is that they are supposed to be role models! What does this teach young girls about character and intelligence? That its not nearly as important as being "pretty". It's sick.

Speaking woman to woman, there are a lot of women for whatever reasons, have the same hang ups as you do.

There is nothing wrong with a young woman whose goal is to be Miss America.

Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Just cuz I prefer a little more cushion that what those girls have, do I think they're NOT attractive... quite the opposite. They're very pretty... just not what I prefer.

I think its interesting that instead of responding to my post, you've chosen instead to assume that I have to be overweight, jealous, and unhappy to say such things. Well here is an article published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders. I understand that their data is based on Miss America contestants from the '80s, but this was the first article I found and don't really feel like I should have to find every piece of evidence to support what I said. I will not try to pick which girls in your "lineup" are anorexic. I merely said they meet the weight criteria for anorexia. I know there are plenty of really skinny girls out there by nature, but not all of them are. And here I issue a correction of my statement, I said virtually all, but this article puts the figure at 60%. Still alarmingly high.

    Cultural Expectations of

    Thinness in Women: An Update

    Claire V. Wiseman, M.A.

    James 1. Gray, Ph.D.

    James E. Mosimann, Ph.D.

    Anthony H. Ahrens, Ph.D.

    (Accepted 10 August, 1990)

An investigation of current American society‘s depiction of the ideal female body

was performed. Body measurements of Playboy magazine centerfolds and Miss

America contestants for 1979- 1988 indicated body weight 13- 19% below expected

weight for women in that age group. Miss America contestants showed a

significant decrease in expected weight between 1979 and 7 988. Comparisons

were made with an earlier study which had demonstrated that body measurements

of both groups had decreased during the period 1959- 1978. Diet-for-weight-loss

and exercise articles in six women’s magazines were tabulated for 1959- 1988. A

significant increase in both diet articles and exercise articles occurred during this

period. These findings suggest that the overvaluation of thinness continues and

thinness is now sought through both dieting and exercise.

Historically, people, especially women, have tried to change their bodies to

conform to the specific era’s image of beauty (Ehrenreich & English, 1978). One

way to trace trends in ideal beauty is to examine various depictions of beauty

in the media, ranging from art or portraits in the pre-camera age to commercial

advertisements and photographs in the present (Lakoff & Scherr, 1984).

Three studies have demonstrated the current emphasis on thinness in the

media. A study of English fashion models over the years 1967-1987 demonstrated

that the desired body shape for models was becoming more tubular,

with bust and hips decreasing while height and waist increased (Morns, Cooper, & Cooper, 1989). Utilizing photographs in Ladies Home Journal and Vogue

magazines Silverstein, Perdue, Peterson, & Kelly (1986) showed that the bust

to waist ratio of models in these magazines has decreased significantly over the

last 20 years, almost reaching the low of the mid-1920s.

Garner, Garfinkel, Schwartz, & Thompson (1980) compared the "ideal" image

of the female body as presented in Playboy magazine and the Miss America

Pageant with the average body size of women. They demonstrated that over a

20-year period of time (1959-1978) there was a significant shift toward a thinner

ideal. Using the Society of Actuaries "Build and Blood Pressure Studies"

(1959, 1979) data as a standard for that time period, Garner et al. (1980) examined

the Playb0.y centerfolds and Miss America contestants as "ideals" in terms

of body shape. They found that during the time period 1959-1978, there was a

decrease in the average weights of Playboy centerfolds and Miss America contestants.

They further demonstrated that between 1959 and 1978, American

women were actually increasing in weight based on the actuarial tables while

"ideals" were becoming thinner and more angular

Garner et al. (1980) also found an increase in the number of "diet-for-weightloss

articles in six leading women's magazines (Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, Ladies

Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Woman's Day, McCalls) between 1959- 1978.

The current study was undertaken to investigate if the trends found for

1959-1978 by Garner et al. (1980) had continued, leveled off, or declined in the

next decade, with some additional analyses, particularly of exercise-for-weightloss

    articles in women's magazines.

    METHODS

Body measurements, age, height, bust size, hip size, waist size, and weight

were obtained for the Playboy magazine centerfolds 1979-1988 and the Miss

America contestants 1979- 1985 (1986- 1988 data were not published). Averages

were based on the number of available data points for a given year.

For the Playboy and the Miss America data, percent of expected weight was

calculated for each centerfold and each contestant by dividing their actual

weight by their average weight, as determined by the Society of Actuaries tables

(Society of Actuaries, 1979), for their height and age group, and multiplying

by 100. These percentages were then averaged over each year.

A tabulation of the number of diet-for-weight-loss, exercise, and diet/exercise

articles was determined for the 30-year period, 1959-1988 for the following

monthly magazines, Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, Ladies Home lournal, Good Housekeeping,

Woman's Day, and McCalls, the same magazines used by Garner et al.

(1980). Exercise articles were defined as articles with a major emphasis on exercise

methods or strategies. Diet articles were defined as only articles promoting

dieting specifically for the purpose of weight loss in women or people in

general. Those articles promoting dieting in men or children were disregarded.

Dietlexercise articles were defined as articles that focused on both diet-forweight-

loss and exercise in a combined weight loss or maintenance program.

Advertisements were disregarded. Specific criteria used in each magazine are

available from the first author. Next, the total number of diet, exercise, and

diet/exercise articles for each year was determined by summing the totals for

    Cultural Expectations 87

individual magazines for each year, which was then divided by the total number

of articles for that year and the resulting value was multiplied by 100 to

produce the variable, percent of total articles, for each type of article for each

    year, 1959- 1988.

    RESULTS

Miss America contestants decreased in body size between 1979-1988 while

Playboy centerfolds remained at a low level of body weight. A significant decrease

in percent of expected weight for Miss America contestants was found

    between 1979- 1988, r = - .77, p < .01 (see Fig. 1). It should be noted that this

trend appeared to level off in the last several years of the decade 1979-1988.

Body measurements, such as bust, waist, and hip size, were compared over

time for both groups. Only one measurement changed significantly: Miss

    America contestants showed a significant (r = -.87, p = .01) decrease in hip

size from 1979-1985. There were no other significant changes in body measurements

    over time.

Over the 10-year period (1979-1988) 69% of the Plnyboy centerfolds and 60%

of Miss America contestants had weights 15% or more below the expected

weight for their age and height category, as determined by the Society of Actuaries

table. According to the DSM-111-R (American Psychiatric Association,

1987), maintaining body weight of 15% below expected weight is one of the

    major criteria for anorexia nervosa.

No significant difference in percent of expected weight was found between

the winners of the Miss America Pageant, t(9) = 1.4 n.s. and the nonwinning

contestants, or between the Playboy centerfold of the year and the other centerfolds,

    t(9) = 0.3 n.s.

A comparison was then made with the study by Garner et al. (1980).

The results with corrected p values are: Garner et al. (1980) Miss

America below their Playboy ( p < .001), Garner et al. (1980) Miss America above

    the current study’s Miss America ( p = .088), the current study’s Miss America

above the current Playboy ( p = .076), and the Garner et al. (1980) Playboy above

    the current Playboy (p = .268).

A dramatic increase in the number of diet, exercise, and diet/exercise articles

between 1959- 1988 was discovered. Significant positive correlations with years

were found for the percentage of diet articles (r = .78, p < .001), exercise articles

    (r = .88, p < .OOl), and diet/exercise articles (r = .68, p < .OOl) as a percent

of total articles. A regression of the percent of total number of diet and exercise

articles showed the two lines to have significantly different slopes, F(1,56) =

27.86, p < .OO1. The level of diet articles dropped off in 1981 to be surpassed by

the level of exercise articles (see Fig. 2).

    DISCUSSION

The results of this study further support and extend the hypothesis suggested

in the Garner et al. (1980) study, namely, that the cultural ideal for

women’s body size has remained thin and perhaps become even thinner. In

this study, a further decrease in body size was still occurring among Miss

America contestants and body size had plateaued at a very low level for Playboy

centerfolds. The increase in thinness in Miss America contestants was demonstrated

by the decrease in percent expected weight, ratio of body

measurements, and hip size. It is important to note that the trend in women’s

body size found by Garner et al. (1980) did not reverse itself, it simply levelled

off or decreased further, indicating that this index of women’s ”ideal” body imCultural

    Expectations

Has generally stabilized at 13-19% below expected weight. A possible explanation

for the current levelling off in women’s ideal body size would be that

a decrease in percent of expected weight now would be almost impossible and

decidedly into dangerously unhealthy ranges. It may be described in terms of a

floor effect. Body weights below 15% of expected are defined by the DSM-111-R

(American Psychiatric Association, 1987) as one of the criteria for anorexia nervosa.

Thus a majority of these ”ideals” of our society may be classified as having

one of the major symptoms of an eating disorder. The statement this

makes about our society is significant, namely, that we desire the body size of

a person who is extremely thin. Although a causal relationship may not be

drawn directly from this data, it is possible that the expectation that women’s

bodies should be very thin may lead to the onset of eating disorders in other

women. This may offer some insight into the recent almost ”epidemic rise” in

the incidence of eating disorders (Brisman & Siegal, 1984; Waltos, 1986).

The survey of magazine articles indicates an overall increase in emphasis on

weight reduction over the 30-year period. A rise in the proportion of diet, exercise,

and diet/exercise articles was found. However, the number of exercise

articles in the last 8 years has surpassed the number of diet articles. This may

indicate the beginning of a new trend, exercise and fitness for weight loss in

addition to or in place of dieting. The idea of combining diet and exercise in

one weight loss program has gained popularity in the last 30 years. This may

seem to be doubly effective to some, cutting calories and burning calories while

achieving tone. However, in the DSM-111-R the use of excessive exercise is

listed as a method of purging oneself following a binge episode. An overemphasis

on exercise may simply provide a less discernible method of purging allowing

some people to suffer from bulimia nervosa and not be readily

    diagnosed.

And Miss America does try to promote its organization as one that encourages girls and women to be leaders and thinkers. This is part of their purpose statement taken directly from the Miss America website. So yes, it is telling young women that their value can be added up to how well they look in a swimsuit.

"Rich in history and social significance, the Miss America Organization is a not-for-profit organization that has maintained a tradition for many decades of empowering young women to achieve their personal and professional goals, while providing a forum in which to express their opinions, talent and intelligence. Scholarships have been the cornerstone of the Miss America program since 1945 when Bess Myerson was the first Miss America to receive a scholarship from the Organization."

Unless your name is "vast majority" you can pretty safely assume it wasn't directed at you

Failing that, you could simply ask...

As to whether or not young girls emulate one individual or another as a role model, I suspect that has more to do with her parental upbringing than pictures on a TV or in a magazine

I'm sorry I was operating under the pretense that the purpose was to discuss the "news" posted on this site. Sorry I take the fact that woman literally die to be this thin seriously. Sorry I believe that this sets little girls up to have to constantly struggle the rest of their lives with their identity because our society cares more about their bodies than minds.

I do agree that no one forces these women to participate in Miss America, but all woman are forced by our society to struggle with this near impossible expectation of beauty. I think its absolutely ridiculous that my opinion "doesn't matter" and I must be a fat crazy feminist for caring about women's issues, which clearly relates to this "news". Maybe you Maddad should find an alternate site if you aren't open to a real discussion.

And by the way, now that I'm back from having dinner, I can finish my comment to Anne.

I wasn't aware I HAD to use those functions to participate on newsvine. I thought they were an just an option so users could choose how much information they wanted to reveal and how involved they want to be.

You don't have to use them. But generally, as in all walks of life, when you're coming into a discussion, and you want to partake in a discussion most people like to know who they're dealing with and what kind or type of person they're dealing with so they know how to handle this person if a conflict arises.

In your case, I saw a person come into an article of which obviously they have a problem with, and cause all kinds of havoc because they don't like the bantering going on in the article.

instead of responding you simply call names

Again, as I said in comment 6.4, I never called you a name but....gee...what's this in comment 4.6 which I believer is your comment....

Wow you guys aren't pigs at all?!

Yah, okay Anne. Tell me another one.

...you're nothing but a bully...and a virtual one at that. HAVE A NICE LIFE.

No Anne. You're the bully. Everyone here was having fun. We were all having a good time and then you pop in with your negative attitude and become the bully because you don't agree with what the rest of us are doing.

Read everyone of these comments and they're all positive. They're all playful people, including the author.

Comment 5.5 that you posted screwed up a damn good article. Who in the hell is going to read that stupid sh!t? Maybe someone who has the same negative attitude as you. But most people who don't like beauty contests wouldn't even cum onto articles such as this. They bypass them and go into another article that is more to their liking. If you're so into anorexia, why don't you go into one of the health care articles in the political arena and blow your steam off.

Anne, I do hope you are having a nice life and I do hope you have at least 1/2 of the humor in you that the rest of the people on this article have.

THANK GOD I HAVE YOU TO SET ME STRAIGHT.

I can't set you straight and neither can God. Only you can do that and that's only if you want to.

            Hi Kimmie,

I didn't think I was. I personally saw a bully calling another a bully. When in fact, all they had to do was look in a mirror.

Nah...Keep your crown. Put it up on the shelf as a fond memory that you are a lot of fun and an asset to the Vine. Unlike some of the Viners who like to rain on peoples parades because they lack self esteem and a sense of humor.

Wow! Guess what? Click on her name. She's gone. Well, I'll give her credit. When she said she was leaving NV, she kept her word. God Bless her. She's a woman of her word.

That's funny. I told Ms. Cyprah I should start a group called "Troll Alert". One of the other Viners, when she spots a troll she types in her comment box "TROLL ALERT!!" Then everyone marks "No Value" and gets the person collapsed by the community.

I could call all Viners who want to be on the watch for these people and when they spot them, come into the group, link the article and we swarm........[laughing]....like a NV Swat Team.

Can't. I wrote articles before and seeded them from sources. It was too much like work. A good author monitors their articles and comments to each comment. I didn't have time to goof off on other peoples articles. So when I closed my page down, I closed all articles down and decided to just play. I like it better this way. I can hop around and cause havoc. Good havoc, hopefully.
