Ask 6-year-old Dawson Hackney what happened, and he mumbles his response. He simply can't explain it. But his parents are looking for answers.
"I'm concerned that the supervision isn't where it needs to be," his mother, Keisha Hackney said.
Dawson was a student at Brookview Elementary in Jacksonville. He usually rides a van after school to a day care facility, but on Tuesday he walked home, crossing busy St. Johns Bluff Road and Atlantic Boulevard.
"Two things crossed my mind: What if he was hit by a car or what if someone had picked him up?" said Hackney.
No problem; we know children are safe as can be in Florida! {{{sarcasm}}}
Here's where educating and communicating with the children are sooooooooo important! It needs to be done daily even if the parent or teacher thinks the child has a clue, they may not.
Wow. I understand that mistakes happen, but this is a doozy because of the possibilities. Yes, this school needs to do something to make sure these kids are identified better as to which line they need to be in. Leona said a mouthful that one cannot assume that a child knows what to do despite daily repition.
Yes, the child is partly responsible because he should have known better, but as I said, there needs to be something put into place that prevents that.
wow how in the world... nevermind don't wanna know somebody didn't ask the right question somewhere or didn't tell this kid the right thing... I think perhaps people should try to teach their kids to think for themselves a lil more
This was a 6 year old kid; that's the whole point, they CAN'T think for themselves yet.
they can think for themselves in a limited capacity such as should I be in the bus line or the walking line given they have some reference and guidance
What the "can "do and "really" do are two different things; there are days a six year old can't remember if they are in the lunch line or the bathroom line.
with my admittedly limited experience with six year olds I can say that as to be true or false but the ones in my family I have watched do seem to know that they can't walk home
I agree, James, that parents and teachers should be teaching the children to think more for themselves and think rationally amongst three to four choices in what they should do.
Admittedly at 6, the parents have had much longer to teach any reasoning skills that the child should have, but the school has had some time for influence.
Was this child a kindergartener or 1st grader?
(I admit now that I had a very odd child that was extremely responsible for himself and aware of what he should and shouldn't do. That doesn't mean that he always did what he should do, but he was very adapt at comprehending when he did something he should have known better than to do. He is now 8, so 6 was not that long ago.)
District spokesperson Jill Johnson said Dawson apparently got in the line of "walkers" instead of the line for bus riders
This is nothing but a worthless alibi to escape disciplinary sanction. Who knows how long this's been happening; Dawson's case may just put an end to it.
