advertisement

Set the clock back 70 years. Polk County Sheriff's deputies say they've busted up a still and arrested two moonshiners.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Deputies found the a still in Bartow following an anonymous tip. State alcohol agents were called in to dismantle the still and confiscate seven jars of moonshine.

If it weren't for moonshiners, we wouldn't have NASCAR. It has been legal to make wine at home since the end of prohibition, and legal to make beer since 1978, but it's still illegal to distill spirits for beverage purposes without going through so much fuss and bother that the government admits flat out that it's "impractical."

...damned nice little set-up they had there. You'd think the government would have better things to do than bust these guys, but, hey, it's all about money and 'keeping the common stock in it's place.' I live in W. NC and the ATF has 8 full time agents looking for 'shiners' here in the hills .

No harm done by these stills..............

If I can brew beer in my own home for my own consumption I should be able to distill liquor for the same purpose.

Liquor is legal. Pot is not. It is all a matter of the government losing out on liquor taxes and the Kennedy family losing out on revenue.

By the way, I do not drink.

It should be legal for people to distill their own spirits for personal consumption. Where these guys went wrong was selling some of their product.

I thought is was legal to distill up to a certain amount for personal use, before the taxing came in. Maybe it was because they admitted to selling some to friends. BTW they got a whole 7 jars I wonder what the amount actually was, about 7 quarts. The deputies and state alcohol agents must really be proud about busting such a large operation. LOL

Not sure where you are from Pvt, but as far as I know it is still illegal to distill liquor for your own consumption in the US. It wasn't until 1978 that we could brew our own beer.

From what I've read other countries are more enlightened in this area and allow a certain amount to be made.

The government wouldn't lose tax revenue if they made it legal as that would cause more people to be interested in the product and want to explore and compare. Just look at the micro-brew industry that has sprung up since homebrewing became legal.
