Inflammatory right-wing pundit Ann Coulter took aim at a University of Ottawa administrator Monday night, saying an e-mail from the school warning her to use "restraint, respect and consideration" when addressing Ontario students during a speaking tour this week made her a victim of a "hate crime."

Speaking to students and academics at the University of Western Ontario Monday, Coulter said the e-mail sent to her Friday by Francois Houle, vice-president academic and provost of the University of Ottawa, targeted her as a member of an identifiable group and as such, she will be filing a complaint with the Human Rights Commission alleging hate speech.

"I'm sure the Human Rights Commission will get to the bottom of it," Coulter said to loud cheers from the 800-strong audience. "I think I'm the victim of a hate crime here. Either what (Mr. Houle) did was a hate crime, or the whole commission is BS."

By the left's definition of hate crime,

I don't anyone on the left defines objecting to an evening of hate speech as a hate-crime.

The left, and most anyone else, defines a hate crime as a crime committed against a person or group because of their religious views, their race, their gender, or their sexual orientation.

Ann wasn't there to talk about religion (spewing about how everone else's is plain wrong and they should be converted to Christianity doesn't count). So I fail to see how the protest against her meets the left's (or anyone's) definition of a hate-crime.

However, the email was ignorant.

The e-mail was to let her know that she should not be ignorant of Canadian Law!

Maybe, just maybe, if she stopped making a living spewing hate she would not be the "victim" of a hate crime.

Just one question. What was the crime? I did not know that it was a crime in Canada to object to a purveyor of hate. Did someone actually lay a hand on her? Was she dragged behind a pick up truck to her death? Was she lynched? Was she set on fire? Was she lynched while on fire? What was the crime?

Please point out what she would have said that violates Canadian Law.

Last time I checked, it wasn't written into Canadian Law to punish people before the crime.

The left, and most anyone else, defines a hate crime as a crime committed against a person or group because of their religious views, their race, their gender, or their sexual orientation.

Wrong because calling someone a 'socialist' is labeled as hate speech by the left.

As is saying "you lie" to someone.

As is saying anything not in support of Barack Obama.

Deny all you like, but it's evident on Newsvine judging by the amount of times I have been accused of writing hate speech.

By the left's definition of hate crime, I would agree with Ann. By my definition no. However, the email was ignorant.

The Right seems to assume (singly or en masse) that the Left defines "hate crime" as "anything we say that you don't like"... and so, any time there's a situation where they are challenged for saying those things, that's how they interpret the situation...

Douglas (#1.4) has the right idea, but of course that doesn't fit the conservative narrative, does it?

Bzzzzt. Wrong answer.

The first one we just assume you are a teabagger. No harm, no foul.

The second one we say, "Isn't it wonderful someone with Turret's Syndrome can serve in Congress."

The third we just assume you are a Republican. Again, no harm, no foul.

(1) Obviously nobody can know what she would have said. Except for her. Duh.

(2) She wasn't punished by Canadian law. She was informed of it.

(3) My guess is: Because she her usual spewings of hate would violate that law and she didn't have the guts to go to jail for her beliefs, or because she decided she simply would make herself a victim rather than spew her usual hate, she chose not to speak.

Getting a lecture and getting talked down to is pretty much a punishment if you haven't said anything. It was certainly disrespectful. I don't concur with Ann Coulter's "hate crime" assessment, and frankly, it's ridiculous for her to even go there. However, it's beyond disrespectful to assume that someone is going to break the law before they even set foot on your campus. In that case, they should have not permitted her to speak.

I don't give a damn what Ann Coulter does. I just think it's ignorant to assume she's going to commit a crime or incite a riot, send a condescending email, and NOT ban her from campus.

stop blaming the victim guys.

Please.

Ann believes she is the victim and we should all support her seeking justice.

no matter how big an A-hole is, that person still deserves justice and we should thoroughly encourage Ms Coulter to seek it for herself.

then snicker when her case gets thrown out of court and she's revealed for the publicity hound she is.

I for one would fully welcome admitting I was wrong about that one.

Andi,

I know that, but my American values dictate my opinion about justice. Certainly there are bound to be some differences in laws, but I'm not the person that purported that a law was broken, Ann Coulter was.

This means that she believes she knows enough about Canadian law to make such a statement, and thus I encourage her to seek justice in Canadian court.

I personally think she's full of sh*t, and I'd love to see it proven, but I'd be perfectly accepting of a decision made in her favor too. Either way, I'm all for someone standing up for her rights.

I disagree wholeheartedly! Just because she believes and says she is a victim is no reason for me to support her seeking justice! People in the wrong usually use the "I'm the victim" mentality- especially when caught!

I believe she was forewarned because of her history of hate-mongering, and the university felt the need to warn her that this would not be allowed - before she perpetrated theses acts.

I feel she was not wronged, but conversely, was treated very respectful which is better than she treats the people she attempt to vilify and demonize!

Almost every one of her words is full of hate and judgement. Please point out what she would have said that violates Canadian Law.

Last time I checked, it wasn't written into Canadian Law to punish people before the crime.

Dame Q. In his email to the Coultergeist, U of Ottawa Academic VP and Provost Francois Houle wrote:

"Our domestic laws, both provincial and federal, delineate freedom of expression (or "free speech") in a manner that is somewhat different than the approach taken in the United States. I therefore encourage you to educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada and to do so before your planned visit here. Promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges." He went on to remind the Coultergeist of the strong Canadian tradition of "restraint, respect and consideration."

Now I know why I was so devastated the last time I was confronted with one of those "click-it or ticket" signs on the freeway.

If you consider the above to be punishment I want you for a judge should I ever break a law.

It's not a crime to hate Coulter. Hell, if you're a rational human being, it's almost an obligation. That said, there was no "hate crime" here. Quite honestly, Coulter quailed at the thought of facing a crowd of critical protesters. Like all good demagogues faced with an unfriendly crowd, she made tracks for more productive venues.

And, seriously, isn't the "poor persecuted conservative" schtick pretty stale, already? Coulter opining on "double standards" is about like a $5 hooker talking about charity. Give it a rest, already.

It's not as if Coulter doesn't have a history of saying things just to piss people off. There's a reason "inflammatory" is used so often to describe her. The catch is, this wasn't an event in the US with our very broad definition of "free speech." It was scheduled in Canada.

A seperate country. With it's own laws. It's own constitution. A narrower definition of freedom of speech where Coulter's usual statements that are protected here could cross legal lines there.

Canada is not "America Light" or a colony or protectorate of this country. Ann either doesn't seem to know that or expects to have diplomatic immunity.

The email was intended to help her keep out of trouble. If this is how she twists such an attempt at civility around, I say put her on a world tour, shield her from any further such pointers on local laws, and let her deal with the consequences of shooting off her mouth as she damn well pleases.

And, in the interest of acting on her opinions of big government, make sure we don't waste any Federal dollars bailing her bony ass out of any trouble she gets into as a result.

then when it turns out she's NOT the victim as proven in a court of law, there will be yet one more bit of positive proof that she's full of sh*t, but we support her right to stand up for herself and whatever group she thinks she's part of that was being intimidated by this email.

This is not a left or right issue. This is an issue of respecting and following the laws of another country. Were she in the US and this happened I would be the first to stand up for her and tell you all that is what makes america great is our ability to speak our minds with out persecution.

Coulter hasn't been persecuted. She has, in fact, made a killing off of pushing the boundaries of freedom of speech-- if she didn't make outrageous statements, no one would know who the hell she is, and she wouldn't sell any books. She sure as hell isn't going to make her way in the world as a great thinker.

And in this case, she voluntarily canceled the speech. It wasn't out of fear, it wasn't because she's persecuted, and it certainly wasn't because she's the victim of a "hate crime."

billy, please explain how Coulter being advised by citizens in another sovereign nation ( with its own laws ) that her usual style of commentary that's constitutionally protected in the US can get her in trouble by the laws of the nation she's visiting fits the definition of "hate crime". Seriously. I'm actually asking for you to present the logic in that.

You expect visitors from other countries to follow our laws when they're here or face penalties, how is it "hate" for a Canadian to help Coulter avoid trouble by informing her ( in a civil tone, no insults, slurs, or threats involved ) that she's expected to act within Canadian law while she's there?

Nice to see the bitterness of the left come out...but the again Democrats are the reason the United States needed a civil rights bill

Let's all read and consider this statement for a minute here.

Ok. Did you read it? Consider it? Wrap your head around it? Have you stopped shaking your head and laughing?

The bitterness of Lefties. That it's because of US we need CIVIL rights.

    Ahem.

Gee, I rather enjoy being happy and hopeful and knowing my child will now be covered until she's 26. She may get easier access to more money for college she starts next Fall.

2 major stress areas. Alleviated. YES WE CAN.

My parents, who are both ill, have been lifted out of the damn doughnut hole and won't have to cut their pills in half to stretch them out. YES WE CAN.

My dad's Alzheimer's meds and my mom's diabetes meds won't be a "DO WE EAT OR TAKE OUR MEDS' situation anymore.

Oh and I AM SOOOOOOO GOD DAMMED BITTER about that! Can you tell how bitter I am?

So if this is bitterness. I'm rather enjoying being oh so BITTER.

Now. Here's a mirror. Take a lonnnnnnnnnnng, hard, look.

Do you see any Democrat throwing bricks? Shooting out windows? Threatening people and their families? Cutting propane lines? Calling the potential injury or worse of a congressman's brother "collateral damage?," spitting on and calling our political leaders @!$%#s, faggots and baby killers?

Sarah Palin callously using rifle cross hairs to signal the RELOADING against Democratic politicians.

Where are all the Left and Democrats doing all this?

    And we're bitter?

No we are utterly DISGUSTED and ASHAMED that fellow Americans are this ugly, this hateful, this violent.

    You are the UGLY American.

    Hmm.

You see, where I come from, The United States of America, the behavior I just listed and is proven by audio and video, that shows the RIGHT fully engaged in that vile behavior egged on by it's leaders.

This comes from the morally and ethically bankrupt hearts and minds of the truly ignorant, hateful and bitter fringe that I thought only existed "Over there" in the mountains and caves and destroyed villages and towns of the Middle East.

Someone said way earlier that we should be respectful. To that I say NO. Respect is earned. She has done nothing to earn my respect and I will not show her any. in fact, IMO she has earned derision. All she does is spew hate, half truths, lies, and bigger lies. If a fact ever does come out of her mouth it is purely by accident, because she has no use for the truth in forming her opinion and spewing on the public discussions of the issues.

She gets no respect because she has not earned any.

I would laugh at Coulter if she wasn't so pathetic. The utter crap that comes out of her mouth is pure poison and she actually gets paid for her nastiness. I would say this about ANYONE, left or right, who behaved this way in a public and PAID forum. Her cutting words, distortion of the truth and outright lies tell the story. Even O'Rielly and a few others have facts to back up their opinion. Even though I rarely agree, I respect their search for truth (their truth) and not just utter crap like Ms. Coulter tries to pass off as fact.

The Right would be screaming if a individual from the left behaved the way Coulter does. I am a Centrist who leans socially left and have found no one to compare to Coulter and her hate speech. She can dish it out, but cries when it comes back to bite her on the a$$...poor, poor Coulter; what does she expect with her vicious attacks, unfounded personal name calling and her arrogant, smug attitude all packaged in a 1990's black cocktail dress? She spews her hate rhetoric and laughs all the way to the bank.

As a Canadian ex-patriot, I have experienced the vast differences in how political debate and opposition is handled. She was invited as a guest yet refused to respect the Canadian culture. Another way she shows her classless disrespect for others. Coulter is a sad and ridiculous character with no merit or credibility. The joke is on her...she is the joke. If anyone takes her seriously, then they need to do some soul searching. Instigating through name calling, skewed facts and made up rhetoric cannot be taken seriously in the American political arena. Maybe if we all ignore her, she'll fade away. We can hope. She is nothing but a flash in the pan and should never be taken seriously.

I say, let the Canadians keep her...although I feel awful doing that to my Country of birth. They can always set her afloat on a boat and let the oceans take her where she belongs...away from actual human beings and spend her life with her 'people'; Great White Sharks!

      Persecuted my A$$!!!!!

Bill, quit trying to pretend that Democrat/Republican has always been the same as liberal/conservative. In 1963, Democrats were the conservative party. We both know it. The problem is flaws in conservatism and liberalism, not party identifications.

I don't see that she is a victim of a hate crime by the definition. And I'm not sure she fits the definition of a human being either so does she have rights at all?

Not one of them, however, ever humiliated a Muslim student by suggesting she take a flying carpet as transportation. Nor did any of them insult a Jewish talk show host by belittling his religion TO HIS FACE on camera. Nor did any of them suggest that the 9/11 widows welcomed the deaths of their spouses. Shall I go on or do you get my drift? The "milk of human kindness" is unknown to Ann Coulter. She is a cruel creature.

The Dangers of Revolutionary Right-Wing Rhetoric

Nothing but hate it...is what the Democrats have been when you argued that "Chattel slavery was for the good of God and endorsed in the Constitution"....it is just a manipulation of the Constitution, same as what they are doing now to pass healthcare...and spewing out their hate again....and all the while telling that the leopard has changed his spots....isnt going to happen

Way to go ..wasnt your party the one to pass a Hate crime bill....yes but one that Protected only certain people...segartion in laws again...it is why you claim to only tax a certain segment of the population ...segregation of taxes....you hating lefties are nothing but a bunch of Lester Maddox clones.

welcome to the world of your ingnorance... if you paid attention you would know your lrfty buddies brought up this issue first on the vine....and actually wrote an article about how republicans are bad because Democrats killed African Americans so just to remiind you why you are the "Party of Hate"...here is what else your people say:

Billy, billy, billy... seriously. It's dangerous to your health to go through life this quintessentially unable to reason. Follow the argument, if you can. I'll try to make it really simple. 1898 Democrats were "right wing." 1898 Republicans were "liberal." Once you wrap your head around those two facts, things should start to become slightly more clear for you.

Right wing rhetoric in 1898 was bad (and happened to be coming from Democrats). Right wing rhetoric today is bad (and happens to be coming from Republicans).

              Capisce?

In 1898 Democrts tried to control African americans...if you read the article from it tells you how:

A year ago, Wilmington community leaders such as District Attorney Ben David helped launch a reconciliation campaign to restore interracial trust and move beyond blame and defensiveness toward healing. It is a slow process

So they are still dealing with the crap your party caused and all you can says is what? Democrats were right wing?....Here ... Follow thw argument if you can.....We dont support those ideals...you wanted white supremacy and now pretend that you are not that party...yet Wilmington still deals with the effects of what you have done...you are the Democrat party who tried to control people and force your will upon the people.....Now you are passing a healthcare bill where most polls show that the majority do not want this healthcare bill and you are doing it any way, added with fines if you dont follow the rules...effectively again forcing you will upon people, which is not better for the people and not what this country is about, except from your standpoint as a lefty...mind you that would not tell you what is in the bill and that they did try put in a clause for not being able to repeal the law and no contingency plans for failure.. I say this leopard has not changed his spots!

A leopard cant change his spots...

are you suggesting that the spots actively choose to be on the leopard much in the same way that people choose a political party?

              hmmm,

I was always under the impression that the spots were the product of evolution, like, they help the leopard be a better hunter and increase his chances of survival; if conditions changed, then leopards with fewer or no spots, or different kinds of spots as appropriate would evolve, and thus the leopard actually DOES change his spots in the larger sense.

how often does the leopard have a convention with his spots to talk about their mission, platform, vision etc?

This should be pretty easy to explain, since you've already made it so simple, huh?

it is simple you are using the question to deflect from that actual issue ,...you are a Democrat ..you have one the most viiolent racial histories in the world for a civilized nation and a political party and you want to argue a point over leopard spots.....I am sorry the the rectacranial inversion you have does not allow you to talk about actual issues, but if you were capable we would not call you lefty,/ liberal/ populist/ progressive/ communist/ socialist/ .......

and simply put the Leopard does not change his spots.... evolotion does....but you are a Democrat and in 200 years plus of history you have not evolved enough to get past trying to control indivuals, first you argue for slavery...forced labor...now for forced healthcare.... yep it is that simple...you deny ...next time try Blaming George Bush...Now there is an original though...I bet that would use all of the expertise you have...I bet your friends would call you a genius, because nobody would think of that...the only hope you have is evolution...and when evolution came along politically...It started with Hiram Rhodes Revels, the 14th, 15th, and 16th ammendments which you and your Democrat Party still fights today...

The spots dont have a choice and neither do you when it come to Healthcare now.....try saying no!

Creative with the intent to divert from the real issue...grade D+ should be happy you get that much credit

Last night I just happened to re-watch Schindler's List, and I do resent your trivializing the Holocaust. It's a short step from there to historical revisionism.

so the party that once included the racist south signed into law civil rights and jettisoned the south for a generation, to paraphrase Lyndon Johnson, that doesn't count as evolution?

              interesting.

Not only is Billy citing 1898 Democrats, he is CITING 1898 South Carolina Democrats. Why not just go back to the days before the civil war? If he wanted to bring it up to date he would have to cite Robert Byrd, Saxby Chambliss, Shelby, DeMint, The Lt. Gov. of SC, etc. Even Byrd renounced his youthful positions.

she should most definitely file a suit and she should draw as much attention to it as absolutely possible. I'll even do my part by paying attention to the whole circus, and commenting on NV where applicable.

If she genuinely believes it, she should follow through and seek justice.

                        otherwise she's a coward, I say.

Well the very fact that we can gleefully picture the trouble Ann would get into in a court of law having to defend herself with actual facts and knowledge of real law... just tells you it won't happen.

She wouldn't even face the protesters or the horde of people who suddenly wanted to attend her presentation in Ottawa. She wasn't banned or shut out as she claims - she cut and run to FOX-friendly Calgary.

At no time was she charged with anything or stopped from saying anything or going anywhere. She made 2 of 3 planned appearances at $10,000 a pop. If that's a hate crime, somebody please victimize me.

No good blaming the victim here,

she's a jerk, but if she feels she was wronged, she should seek justice.

$10 says she won't and she's just fishing for publicity, but...

Of what is she a victim? There was no hate crime committed. There was no crime committed. Sure, she can use the phrase "hate crime" to describe what happened to her to score a political point in an attempt to point out what she feels to be a hypocrisy, but I don't need to support her if I don't believe in her cause, which, in this scenario, is pointless. Glibly calling this a "hate crime" doesn't make it a hate crime.

                        She's a victim of nothing.

well, she claims there was, and it's for a court to decide, not us.

meanwhile I think regarding this one issue, she deserves to be treated like anyone else who claims to be a crime victim.

and then laughed at when it's revealed that she's full of sh*t.

Very well... she can claim it. And when the court refuses to hear it because the case has no merit, she can then be

laughed at when it's revealed that she's full of sh*t.

=) On this it seems we agree.

the thing is that if you notice the postings of the right wingnuters here and people like coulter black people and other minorities should be dissuaded from using the word "racist"and even talking about persecution. conversely they causually toss the word (and inaccurately) racist far more than any minority poster. when confronted about their selfish, greedy, biased, and bigoted politics whine about being persecuted more than any minority. they act as if they are in some perverse universe and behave in a manner posing as the only ones who have the right to use the term and have the protections.

                        kappa,

It sucks when one goes to merely having equal rights. That is the explanation for the reaction to the term entitlements, too. When everyone has them by law they are no longer special.

Ann Coulter is a Sadist and a Machoist..

Her Machoist self looks in the mirror to her Sadist side.

                          and says

                          "HIT ME"

                          then her Machoist side

                          says impishly

                          "NOoooo"

When they made her they forgot to include intelligence, integrity and self-awareness and instead overloaded her with ego and ignorance.

She is a victim of her own petard.

We'll have it spooled up as soon as you show us the stockpiles of Iraqi WMDs we've found.

Chuck, is that your defense of these low-lifes? You fit right in with the rest of the GOP and Tea-partiers that aren't brave enough or decent enough to denounce these so-called "Real Americans" who are nothing but a virus to normal society.

Chuck will just say that is the drive-by media's take on the story. Right Chuck? It's called the head in the sand defense. Repukes use it all the time.

No, what I would say is I do not condole violence against any American not matter their political stance belief, sexual orientation or race. I was commenting on the claim that the senator was called the N word. I saw or heard no audio of this happening. I did see the congressman angry reaction, so I do believe something was said to him that he did not like.

Guys threats of violence like this is not a subject we should be taking lightly or politicizing. This bill and the many to follow I'm sure will only escalate such threats. I hope you guys sit back ant contemplate is it worth introducing bills that cannot deliver what they promise just to score political wins?

We won't have a country where we can have these debates if it goes up in smoke due to civil unrest.

                                Just something to think about.

I think it's worth introducing bills that deliver what they deliver. Whether or not what they deliver is what we want remains an open question, and working toward seeing that they do is the job for which we elect politicians.

What seems to be happening these days, however, is that a certain segment of the population feels affronted if all legislation doesn't cater to their narrow whims-- and they seem more than willing to break the law, counsel others to break the law, and issue threats in pursuit of getting what they want.

Oh, and they occasionally throw tantrums in public.

                                  Just sayin'.

                                  Chuck,

I have listened to her spew @!$%# for years while disrespecting the rights of others to serve her own greedy ass. She has earned no respect and I give her what she has earned as a pimple on the ass of humanity. And I use the term humanity loosely.

                                    Nope but she should be.

The more people laugh at her the more she'll become a walking, talking, irrelevant joke.

At the rate she's going it wont be long.

                                    :)
