Michael Mead didn't want Lucy Johnson to have his baby, a prosecutor said Tuesday, so when she turned down his plea to have an abortion, he shot her twice and set her house on fire. But Mead's attorneys described him as a doting fiancée looking forward to raising a family with the 31-year-old nurse from Gaston County. The culprit, they say, was an ex-boyfriend who had abused and threatened Johnson in the past, and who wanted sole custody of their mutual son.
