Police charged Kevin Gilchrest, 48, with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree rape and kidnapping.

Arrest warrants revealed that after being raped and strangled, the victim faked her death to try to escape. Police said Gilchrest raised the victim's arm and it flopped down. Gilchrest then placed his hand under her nose to see if she was breathing, and the victim held her breath.

Police said Gilchrest put the woman in his vehicle and then dumped her nude body on the side of Summit Avenue in below-freezing temperatures.

I do not know what it is.. but if I checked to see if someone was alive.. I'd be checking their pulse.. wrist, neck, chest, and see if the body is still warm..

She was smart. He would have killed her otherwise. But she survived to testify against him and hopefully keep him from doing this to someone else in the future... unless the courts let him off with a slap on the wrist.
